Overview

Barbatos Bachiko is the tutor of Iruma Suzuki. She belongs to the Barbatos family who excels in archery and is one of the clans of the three heroes of the Netherworld[1]. She is the older cousin of Bars Robin and is now a member of the 13 Crowns.

Appearance[]

Bachiko is shorter than Iruma. She has long, twin-tailed magenta hair and wears a short-sleeved frilled dress with striped stockings and bow-tied shoes. She is often depicted with jail bar teeth and always has a Pocky hanging around her mouth.

Personality[]

Initially, Bachiko comes off as a stereotypical delinquent brat: Loud, short-tempered, selfish, and tomboyish. This attitude is later revealed to have developed as a result of her sadness and frustration, after the countless demons she attempted to teach her skills to ultimately all gave up because they lacked the patience to master archery. However, she is also shown to recognize and respect when a person is truly committed to learning the skills she endeavors to pass on to them, as is the case with Iruma.

History[]

Bachiko is one of "The Great Valley War" Heroes' descendants and second in charge of the Barbatos Clan next to the Barbatos President. Given this incredible feat, along with her high rank 8 and "Full Mark: 100 Shots, 100 Hits" bloodline ability, even one of the Three Greats, Sullivan, acknowledged her own strength, and many demons approached Bachiko to train under her in hopes of learning the skill. She taught various demons and was shown to be a very optimistic, outgoing, and encouraging master. Unfortunately, no demon has the patience and focus needed for archery, so they all leave her. This resulted in Bachiko giving up her hopes about successfully having a student, which is why she was sour and grouchy when first introduced to Iruma and Lied.

Abilities[]

  • Master Archer: Being part of the Barbatos Clan, Bachiko is a master archer specializing in firing perfect shots and always hitting the target. Everyone in the Netherworld acknowledges her abilities; Sullivan states she can be one of the next 13 Crowns, and her cousin Robin remarks how terrifying she is on the battlefield.
  • Full Marks (One Hundred Shots, One Hundred Hits): Bachiko's bloodline magic. It enables her to manifest a bow and fire up to 100 magic arrows simultaneously, which will always strike their target without fail, regardless of distance or interference. Even among demons, her ability is rare for two reasons: One, she is one of only three people in the Barbatos family who can fire 100 arrows in one go using the ability. Two, archery is nearly impossible for demons outside the Barbatos family to master, as most demons lack the patience to focus on aiming and firing an arrow.
  • Quartz Quartz: This spell transforms items from core material. Such as wood or iron being turned into a wooden or iron bow. Bachiko shows this ability to Iruma to help him find his own bow for his training and the Harvest Festival.

Relationships[]

Iruma Suzuki[]

The student Bachiko was asked to aid in tutoring by Lord Sullivan. At first, she openly tells him he's an idiot for going along with the ridiculous demands and chores she heaps on him at the beginning of her "training" him. However, after beginning to train him in earnest by passing on her archery skills, she recognizes his dedication to learning from her and treats him with more respect.

After learning that he's human from Sullivan, she is momentarily shocked, but ultimately, her resolve to continue teaching Iruma is only strengthened by learning what he is. She decides he is the only person who could be her student precisely because he's not a demon (in light of her past failures in trying to teach actual demons how to be archers).

Bars Robin[]

Robin is her younger brother and a member of a branch family deriving from the Barbatos line. Like many of his peers, Bachiko also shows that she finds Robin naive and dense. However, their true feelings say otherwise. In fact, Bachiko and most of the teaching staff in Babyls know he is capable and trustworthy. Quoting her line from a conversation with Robin, "Y'know, Robbie, it's a shame you're from the branch family. But at the same time, I'm a little relieved... If you'd been born into the main family, I'm sure you'd steal my nickname because... there isn't a demon around who is more suited to being an archer than you."[2]

Lord Sullivan[]

Bachiko greatly respects and admires Sullivan, to the point of becoming somewhat flustered in his presence. She is also extremely loyal to him, willing to set off and attack the Six Fingers with her bloodline ability if she thinks he wishes her to do so. Sullivan, in turn, also trusts her greatly, as he is willing to reveal to her that Iruma is a human after the Harvest Festival.

Paimon[]

Paimon and Bachiko hold a mutual grudge and argue with each other as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Bachiko is annoyed by Paimon's dapper and critical attitude, saying she smells like grass and insulting her tea. The root of their mutual dislike for one another is currently unknown. It is shown that the two were rivals at some point before Paimon became a Crown during the Deviculum arc.

Barbatos President[]

She is very close to the (presumed) heir of the Barbatos Clan and will do anything to protect her, even start a war after the debacle at the Deviculum. Most surprisingly, she doesn't care if she gets a seat due to her shortcomings. What made him angry was the spur-of-the-moment call for her to take the King's seat. He likely cares a great deal for her if he's willing to start a war because of this grave insult in his mind with the backing of the Vepar and Furfur clan. His rage towards this is enough to frighten the Thirteen Crowns and worry the Three Greats.

Trivia[]

  • In demonology, Barbatos is an Earl and Duke of Hell, ruling thirty legions of demons and has four kings as his companions to command his legions. He gives the understanding of the voices of the animals, says past and future, conciliates friends and rulers, and he can lead men to hidden treasures that have been hid by the enchantment of magicians.
  • In Modern depictions it shows Barbatos wielding a a bow while riding a bear which is probably why they show the Barbatos Clan as a clan of Archers.
  • Her first name, Bachiko, may be a pun on 'Bachi kon', the onomatopoeia for the sound of something striking another object with force (the sort of sound effect one might use for an arrow hitting a target). バチ "bachi" being the "emphasis for an intense or powerful moment" and コン (kon) being the sound of knocking or hitting something. ばちっこんっ (Bachiikon) is also what she, and later Iruma, shouts when she shoots her bow.
