"Momonoki-sensei. A teacher's job... is not just about filling quotas." ― Naberius Kalego
The New Teacher, Momonoki: Part 1 (新人教師モモノキ 前編 Shinjin Kyōshi Momonoki Zenben?) is the three hundred-and-seventeenth chapter of Osamu Nishi's Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun.
Summary[]
As her tutor, Kalego gave Momonoki many tasks. One is collecting the rest of the assignments from the students who didn't turn them in before the deadline. He also tells her to severely admonish them if they can't. Despite that, when Momonoki confronted the students, she nervously asked for their assignments, but they told her they had forgotten and asked for some time to turn them in, which she ultimately accepted. After they do, Momonoki delivers the assignments to Kalego, though she is somewhat off-put by Kalego's lack of acknowledgment. However, he gives her some cryptic advice: a teacher's job is not just filling quotas.
After leaving, Momonoki ponders what Kalego meant, wondering if he meant she should exceed her quotas. As she continues to fume over Kalego's personality, she overhears the students whom she confronted earlier talking about her. To her displeasure, they reveal that they actually copied their assignments from other students, and they were relieved that Momonoki didn't notice, unlike Kalego, who would force them to do it all from scratch.
Dejected, Momonoki sits outside and laments over the realization that the students were looking down on her and potentially others she didn't notice. She then realizes what Kalego was trying to tell her: in focusing on completing her given tasks, she didn't notice what the tasks were, making her no different from an assistant. She starts to tear up over her failure to understand her students as a teacher, but she gets a surprise visit from Shichiro (though he does freak her out a bit).
After Momonoki calms down, Shichiro introduces himself and offers to listen to her worries. Momonoki does so, and Shichiro offers to sniff out anyone lying to her, much to her surprise. He also offers to find a way to make sure they don't lie again and find a way to redeem Momonoki's reputation as a teacher.
