"I'll decide for myself what path I take! So I don't need any guide! As far as aides go, I've got Sa-chan already... there's Poro-chan, too! So yeah! You can serve me if you drop all the kingmaker stuff!" ― Demon King Derkila
Kingmaker (キングメイカー Kingu Meikā?) is the three hundred-and-fifty-eighth chapter of Osamu Nishi's Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun.
Summary[]
Long ago, Mephisto served a demon king named Dokfel. Around his passing, Dokfel gave Mephisto one final task: to select and serve the next demon king. Dokfel presents two qualified candidates to Mephisto; General Alvro, who Dokfel called boisterous with powerful mana, and General Kushinashi, who he calls immensely creative and popular. As the "Kingmaker," it is up to Mephisto to decide which of the two will succeed him, which Mephisto readily accepts.
It turns out that Mephisto has existed since three generations of demon kings, having been written about in their memoires, able to live for so long by constantly being reborn. He has also been called the Demon of Triumph and Ruin, for when someone makes a deal with him, he will either bring you to glory if you earn his respect or reject you and cast you into despair, but the decision lies solely up to him, which is why making a deal with him can be extremely risky.
When Mephisto flew to the battlefield where Alvro and Kushinashi were fighting over supremacy, he instead saw Derkila sitting triumphantly over the two armies, having bested both by himself. Left in awe by the sight, Mephisto immediately swears loyalty to Derkila, promising to make him the greatest Demon King the Demon World has ever seen. Unfortunately for Mephisto, Derkila just as quickly refuses to make him his subordinate because he doesn't want a guide to choose the path for him. He still offers to make him his subordinate, but only if he quits being a Kingmaker.
Derkila's words left Mephisto in despair, as his whole reason for existing was to guide the next Demon King and build the world with him. Sometime after Derkila became Demon King himself, Mephisto faded into the background, for as long as Derkila had no need of him, he saw no reason to exist either. Everything changed when Mephisto learned about the "Trickster Plan" from the Thirteen Crowns, which he saw as a sign that the Demon World no longer recognized Derkila. With this, Mephisto found meaning in his life again, declaring he would create a king surpassing even Derkila.
Currently, though, he has no idea how he ended up participating in Iruma's school for the Many Ears.
