Familiars (使い魔 Tsukaima?) are other forms of lesser demons or magical beasts that can be used as subordinates to assist a demon.
Overview[]
Familiars are supposedly subordinates that serve their master, whoever summoned it. Should a familiar disobey or hurt its own master, there will be an absolutely severe punishment, as there is already a deep blood pact between both.[1] The pact lasts for one entire year, and prematurely ending it will kill both the master and the familiar.[2]
Summoning[]
Familiar Summoning is a ritual that demons use to form contracts with magical beasts and is also the same process that humans use to enslave demons.[3] Introduced in the Familiar-Summoning Course created by Lord Sullivan, the steps to summon a familiar are as follows:
- Draw a circle in blood on some parchment.
- Head into the magic circle with said parchment.
- Hold the parchment right above the candle in the middle of the circle.
- The smoke will take a form, and your familiar will appear!
Summoning Stickers[]
Special seals sold at the Babyls school store act as a method to summon the user's familiar without extorting mana. Since Iruma has no natural magic, he uses this as an alternative for summoning his familiar, Naberius Kalego.
Human-Demon Ritual[]
This familiar summoning uses the same function in the Human-and-Demon pact ritual. If a human uses the demon's seal in the parchment, they will summon that specific demon. In this case, Iruma had summoned the demon Kalego, and everyone sees this as a familiar summoning. Kalego's appearance drastically changing might have something to do with Iruma's demon ranking at the time of the first summon, but it has not been explained yet.
Renewal/Cancelation[]
After one year of the familiar summoning passes, the master can either renew or cancel the blood pact. Renewing the pact allows the familiar to eternally bind it to its master while canceling it ends the bind, and the master can never summon it again and acquire a new one through regular summoning afterward. Canceling also prevents a new familiar from forming with the same one.[4]
Renewing[]
If the master chooses to renew the blood pact, then these are the steps to do it:
- Summon your familiar.
- Focus on your mana.
- Name your familiar whatever you want, and it has officially bonded it to you!
Canceling[]
If the master chooses to cancel the blood pact, then these are the steps to do it:
- Prepare a summoning seal.
- Light the seal on fire as in a normal ritual.
- Do NOT summon your familiar for the next 13 hours, as it will automatically renew the blood pact.
- Perform a regular ritual, and you have acquired a new familiar!
