Opera (オペラ) is Lord Sullivan's security demon. They are often seen preparing Iruma Suzuki for school and assisting Lord Sullivan with his work. Opera lives in the mansion with Sullivan and Iruma and manages the laundry, cooking, timetabling, and transport for the two of them.

Opera has a master-servant relationship with Sullivan, and Sullivan relies heavily on Opera's abilities and advice to keep him on track and away from distractions. As a security devil, their main priority is to protect their master's life. In addition, Opera is also responsible for safeguarding Sullivan's status, appearance, and reputation.[1] After the events of the Akudol Games, Opera accepts their will as Iruma's servant as well.

Opera's rank is currently unknown. Humorously, Opera was Kalego's upperclassman during their tenure at Babyls as a student and is the only person Kalego genuinely seems to fear, as they made Kalego their gofer.

Appearance

Opera has red hair with a straight-cut fringe and a short plait. They have a pair of red, cat-like hairs protruding from their hair, in addition to the second, elf-like pointed ears they possess. They have red eyes, small thick black eyebrows, and a pale complexion. They also have a black, cat-like tail.

They often wear formal attire, particularly a red vest over a white shirt, a striped red and white tie, and navy dress pants.

Opera is androgynous, with delicate features, slight stature, a plait but a masculine dress sense, and no otherwise overly feminine features.

In their high school years, they wore the female uniform top paired with the male uniform bottom. They also sport shorter black hair, which made Kalego indirectly suffering with their same looks, as their enemies are trying to fight Kalego.

Personality

Opera has a severe and down-to-earth personality most of the time, but they have a sense of humor and can be mischievous. They often try to act as a voice of reason for Lord Sullivan but are usually ignored. They are mostly reserved with their opinions but will voice the occasional concern or cynical remark and sometimes dispense helpful advice.

Their interactions with Naberius Kalego reveal that they have a somewhat more mischievous and sadistic side not generally shown in their professional behavior, which was especially prominent when they were students at Babyls. They also love to make fun of their master Sullivan, like when the Chairdemon was taken by Border Security, sarcastically asking how long the sentence was and the times that they took the devil tea instead of serving it to Sullivan.

But generally, they have a Kuudere personality, as they never show their emotions in the face, but it can be spotted on their cat ears and tail if they're emotional.

History

Not much is known about Opera's life before their enrollment in Babyls, but Opera seems to have been employed or planning to become employed by Sullivan even then.

During Opera's time at Babyls, they were known as the Mysterious Top Dog of Babyls, who sent 666 enemies to the hospital. Though they were well known and quite popular due to their activities, Opera's true identity was a mystery until discovered by Kalego and Balam. They tended to be very violent and brutal towards second-year and third-year students in the school. At the time, Opera's description was similar to Kalego's in that their general identity consisted of dark hair, two horns/ears, and an androgynous appearance.

Once the two met, Opera "befriended" Kalego and, by extension, Balam, whom they often teased and bullied.

Story Overview

Babyls Enrollment Arc

Opera is introduced as the competent servant of Lord Sullivan. They are often seen assisting Sullivan with his work, preparing Iruma for school, and caring for chores. While they are shown to have a close relationship with Sullivan, they seem concerned over his decision to adopt a human grandson. But over time, they accepted their master's decision.[2]

Cannonball Execution Arc

Opera asks Iruma if he wishes to return to the human world. Iruma cannot answer the question, so Opera explains that, with a high rank, it's still possible to travel to the human world.[3] Eventually, Iruma decides that he wants to raise his rank.

With instructions from Sullivan, Opera helps Iruma train for the Execution Cannonball, an activity in which first-year students can rank up. Opera is revealed to have impressive strength, speed, and precision, much to Iruma's shock. Their strict training focuses on helping Iruma catch a ball. This proves to be a challenge due to Iruma's overwhelming crisis evasion capability causing him to automatically dodge every ball thrown at him.[4]

Throughout their training, Opera and Iruma begin to understand each other better. Iruma expresses that he can recognize when Opera is in a good or bad mood depending on what position their kitty ears are in.[5]

After winning the Execution Cannonball and being promoted to Beth (2), Iruma ecstatically thanks Opera for their help. They appear to be happy about this but also somewhat embarrassed. From this point on, the two get along better. Opera shows much more confidence in Iruma, unlike before.[6]

Division Party Arc

Once the Division Party officially begins, Opera and Sullivan come to spend time with Iruma as a family. With their adept skills, Opera embarks on a winning streak across various games and attractions set up by multiple Divisions. Later, Iruma reveals how much he appreciates the two visiting him and exclaims that they're a wonderful family.[7]

Royal One Acquisition Arc

Opera and Sullivan welcome Iruma home after he comes back from the student council. They are happy that Iruma has finally returned. The next day, however, Iruma's personality has completely changed, and he has seemingly entered his Evil Cycle. Opera is so shocked that they drop their dishes onto the floor. They wonder what could have happened to him.[8]

Along with Sullivan, they are relieved after Iruma's personality returns to normal.[9]

First Term Final Exams Arc

When Naberius Kalego pays Iruma's mansion a home visit, it's revealed that Opera was once his classmate, and they're close friends. Opera teases Kalego and bosses him around, although it's all in good nature.[10]

Walter Park Arc

Opera, Kalego, and Balam are entrusted by Sullivan to act as chaperones for Iruma and his friends in Walter Park. When the Panther Rat appears, Opera shields Ix Elizabetta, Crocell Kerori, Azazel Ameri, and Valac Clara from its attack. They can stop the demonic beast in its tracks just by grabbing its claw. They tell the students to run away and exclaim that protecting those important to Iruma is their duty. After the children retreat, Opera launches their counterattack, demonstrating their incredible strength and agility. They leap onto one of the beast's tails and deliver a devastating kick to its face. However, they're so focused on attacking that they're caught off guard by the beast's other tails.

Ameri protects Opera from a hit and explains that, as the student council president, she could not turn her back on a moment of crisis. This amuses Opera. The two decide to team up to fight the Panther Rat until they notice that Clara has returned as well and is dangling from one of the rat's tails.[11]

Ameri aims to fight the rat alone and asks Opera to rescue Clara. She pinpoints the weak spot of the Panther Rat and defends against another one of its blows. Opera is impressed by her reflexes and her control over her magic. After rescuing Clara, they continue to observe Ameri's fight from a distance.

After Ameri defeats the Panther Rat, Opera praises Ameri and expresses that she has room to grow stronger. With piqued interest, they asked Ameri if she would like to work with them as an assistant after her graduation. While Ameri initially declines, she then realizes that being an assistant would mean she would live with Iruma just like Opera. While extremely flustered, she takes back her rejection and says she will think about it again, much to Opera's confusion.[12]

Opera and Ameri appear at Iruma's side during the fight against the merged demonic beast. Opera expresses that they could get there because they followed the scent of Iruma's perfume. Balam asks Opera to team up with him. Opera presents a summoning seal to Iruma, intending to get him to summon Kalego to join them.[13]

Once Kalego is summoned, Opera and Balam cannot help but pet him. Everyone eagerly awaits to see what the three high-ranking demons' battle will look like. Everyone is utterly shocked when the three defeat it in just a single combined hit. However, the Six Fingers cause the defeated demonic beast to turn into a magical bomb. Iruma can consume all of the magic and save everyone thanks to his Ring of Gluttony.

Opera reflects on how they often wondered why Sullivan chose to bring Iruma to the demon world. Now, they feel like they understand his decision.[14]

Abilities

Super Strength: Opera has a great set of arms capable of easily eliminating targets. They destroyed the hardest target without any problem and threw a boulder for a strike in the bowling game during the Divison Party.[15]

Extreme Precision: Opera has keen eyesight and better aim as they can shoot the middle of a target multiple times, striking and splitting their own arrows in half.[15]

Fast Reflexes: Opera can move very quickly and jump long distances smoothly. Opera is capable of doing this even if they are carrying someone with them.[16]

Trivia

  • Despite fans' various and opposing opinions, no biological sex for Opera has ever been confirmed or even stated in the manga, volume extras, anime, light novel, spinoffs, or BD extras. Osamu Nishi, the author, has never spoken on the matter and has pointedly ignored questions about Opera's biological sex in several Twitter Q&As.
  • Their favorite activity is using beds as trampolines.
  • Iruma during his wicked phase is the only thing shown to frighten Opera.
  • Once in a while, when they are the only ones at home, they sit on Sullivan's throne.
  • Opera appears to enjoy the air of mystery regarding their gender, as in a Sukima for Volume 23, when asked what their gender was by Iruma, Opera had asked what they'd thought they were. Iruma hesitantly guessed "female," and Opera teasingly responded, "let's go with that, then," before leaving the confused Iruma behind, still unsure if he got it correct or not, and the narration said, "choose whatever you like." Though, in general, they seem to have most of their personal info as a mystery, as their Birthdate, Height, and Weight are all omitted from their profile in the character book, unlike other characters.
  • When they and Sullivan had a fight, Opera would hide the forks from him.[1]
